Amid the challenging dynamics of an exploration project in YZ Country, a critical juncture surfaced that tested my leadership and decision-making capabilities. I was assigned a task with a specialised team to execute a complex exploration venture in a remote region. The pressure was palpable, and the timeline was tight.

In the pursuit of efficiency, I decided to streamline certain aspects of the project, such as limiting the exploration area to the existing infrastructure, without fully considering the team’s opinion. This oversight led to a breakdown in collaboration, impacting the overall project dynamics. Though well-intentioned, this decision was a misstep as the outcome was no viable business opportunity.

Reflecting on this experience, I recognised that my mistake lay in underestimating the power of inclusive decision-making and not considering the multifaceted nature of our team. In retrospect, the situation could have ended differently. For instance, we might have discovered new business opportunities, as competitors did in the same application round, had I taken the time to engage with my team to brainstorm opportunities away from the infrastructure.

This experience taught me the significance of embracing diversity, fostering open communication, and acknowledging the wealth of perspectives within a multinational team.

At WZ Company, I found myself amid a stellar team of 25 specialists from 14 countries, spanning various disciplines, from engineers to geoscience and data managers.

However, one notable project in Egypt presented an unforeseen challenge when our partner, AB, abruptly changed its drilling strategy, questioning the economic feasibility of the endeavour.

Our team, which I led, swiftly mobilised. We gathered input from each member to address the problem and, eventually, incorporated a new prospect and a different drilling strategy to enhance the project's economic viability. This last-minute adaptation gained AB’s approval for additional resources and exemplified the team's resilience, communication, and collaboration. The EUR 100+ million exploration project was successfully executed in Egypt, a testament to our team's effectiveness. This endeavour fulfilled exploration commitments and contributed to an 18% increase in gas production in the company's portfolio.

I am immensely proud to have been a part of a team that consistently delivered exceptional projects, evidenced by successful hydrocarbon discoveries in Mexico, Egypt, and Norway. Our three-year consecutive win of the Global Exploration Best Team Achievement Award attests to the extraordinary success of our teamwork that offered business success and global energy.

In the heart of ABC, where the bustling city met the echoes of a small town called XYZ, my father's journey unfolded, a tale that would shape my narrative. Born to parents with limited education, my father journeyed to ABC over four decades ago, where he established a small pharmacy business.

The 2000s marked a pivotal chapter when, faced with economic downturns, my father displayed remarkable adaptability. He sold his pharmacies and delved into cable television. He even secured an investor despite lacking formal business knowledge. Our late-night conversations, where he shared stories of his early struggles, instilled in me the importance of perseverance and continuous learning.

These lessons have since guided my education and career across European countries. From Engineering to Science, from one continent to another, transitioning from specialist to generalist, I imbibed his ethos of embracing the unknown with dedication.

His impact extended beyond business, uplifting his town's community by supporting seven families to start their ventures. Motivated by his actions, I have applied his principle of shared success throughout my life.

In my father's resilience and ambition, I discovered a guiding force shaping my journey, embodying the essence of community engagement, adaptability, and continuous learning.

In my current role, navigating the complexities of international operations, particularly in managing relationships with governmental bodies like the XY Ministry of Petroleum, poses a significant challenge. Renegotiating license commitments, where the timeline for executing exploration projects is often unrealistic for vast areas, demands strategic problem-solving and diplomatic skills. Persistent challenges are ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and effective communication across diverse cultural contexts.

One notable instance involved renegotiating the license commitment terms with XY Ministry of Petroleum, requiring delicate communication respecting the cultural intricacies of Egypt. The prolonged back-and-forth exchanges, lasting months, necessitated patience and management approval to adhere to the process. Ultimately, the negotiations concluded on mutually beneficial terms benefiting the interests of the Egyptian government and our exploration team.

Similarly, negotiating with the ABC Ministry of Defence for exploration activities in restricted military zones during my tenure as an Exploration Geophysicist posed intricate challenges. It involved several months of negotiation and multiple information exchanges with prolonged waiting time for bureaucratic approvals, which made it difficult to fulfil the license commitment within the deadline. Balancing operational needs with national security considerations demanded a cautious approach. However, despite all the bureaucratic obstacles, we were able to secure approvals without restrictions.
