Duke MiM Essay Questions and Answer Tips

Q1. Why are you pursuing the MMS degree at this stage in your professional development?

A: This question aims at not only revealing the relevant knowledge you hold and the reason you wish to further hone the same but also get an impressive, well-informed answer as to why you are opting for this course. The motive here is to figure out if you know what and why you are doing.

The answer to this question, which would come up to roughly a 100-word essay, must be informative yet precise. You must mention what you’ve learnt so far and what skill/knowledge you lack with respect to your career goals. Make sure that you don’t go deep into the details of your career goals since there is a separate question for the same

 

 

 

Q2. What are your immediate career goals after completing the MMS program?

A: Pursuing higher education is generally perceived to be a means to an end which is actualizing career goals and Adcoms are here to sieve through tons of candidates and shortlist the ones who showcase drive, determination and future plans that are in line with the value of the school.

While drafting your answer make it a point to be specific about what your short-term goal is, dig deep into the details here – what company and what role. The one thing you must keep in mind is to ensure that your short-term goal is in sync with your long-term goal, they must complement each other.

Q3. Life is full of uncertainties, and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the immediate goals that you provided above not materialize, what alternative directions have you considered?

A: What are uncertainties? Uncertainties are unprecedented changes, changes one isn’t prepared for. Through this question, the adcom is simply trying to judge your adaptability and ability to handle failure, in this case, failure of your plan A career goal. Moreover, since schools on the lookout for candidates who could handle anything thrown at them and face challenges with determination, this question simply seeks to get an answer as to how you would pick up the pace in your career, in case your current goal doesn’t seem to work out.

While answering this question and defining your plan B, ensure that your new plan is similar or near similar to the initial plan. Your goal should be based on similar lines of bridging the gap between your post graduated self and your long-term goal. Don’t forget to highlight how opting for this path would help you gain or hone the required skills.    

Q4. The “Team Fuqua” spirit and community is one of the things that set the Fuqua experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student
body to include faculty, staff, and administration. When a new person joins the admissions team, we ask that person to share with everyone in the office a list of “25 Random Things About Yourself.” As an admissions team, we already know the new hire’s professional and academic background, so learning these “25 Random Things” helps us to get to know someone’s personality, background, special talents, and more. In this spirit, the admissions committee also wants to get to know you—beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes, and dislikes
hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are.

A: Just as the question states, the adcom wishes to know 25 random things about you to get deeper insights into your profile and more importantly your personality. Essay questions generally follow a conventional approach of talking about professional aspirations, capabilities and so on, however, through this question, the school wishes to know interesting facts about you and your decisions so far.

Answering this question is pretty easy. Firstly, begin by jotting down interesting facts about yourself and your journey so far. We suggest making a list of 30+ random things that define your personality, which could include your hobbies, the minor extracurricular activities you undertook, your inspirations, your beliefs, etc. Once you’ve done this, pick 25 points out of these and present them in a bulleted format. Even though it may seem like a fun question to answer, never forget that the competition is intense and that every single point counts. Lastly, ensure that the points you’ve mentioned add value to your profile rather than demeaning it.

Q5. Foundations of Business class, the admissions team is looking for students who are eager to engage with, and learn from, their classmates. This
learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom, as extracurricular engagement is an important part of the MMS experience. Describe how you would plan to be engaged outside of the classroom and how your unique perspective, experiences, and passions will add to the MMS community.

A: Though education and academics are an important part of growth, holistic growth and development is an amalgamation of both extracurriculars and academics. These days, schools wish to track down students who are active participants in extracurriculars, in addition to academics. Why? Because it is a simple give-and-take relationship. It is no secret that it is the students who make a school and bring prestige to its name which is why this question simply seeks an answer to how you will contribute towards the school and vice-versa.

While answering this question, you must pitch to convince the adcom that you are a perfect fit for the school. Differentiate yourself by narrowing down your means of contribution to ones that are unique to you because different is simply impressive and would help you stand out from the other applicants. You need to fortify your contribution by quoting examples from your past experiences as proof of your capabilities and proactiveness. Within a word limit of 350 words, mentioning 2 unique contributions should do the job for you.
