LSE MSc in Management Sample Answer

As a cinephile, I was always intrigued by how ads used different communication techniques, including storytelling, humour, and emotional appeal, to convey marketing messages. My fascination with advertisements, coupled with my interest in the subject of Business Studies, motivated me to pursue a formal degree in business and management. Thus, my decision to join AB University's highly reputed BBA program wasn't just the next logical step but an impassioned choice, given its comprehensive curriculum that promised a deep-rooted understanding of business and management. Working on case studies and learning marketing models and theories such as Keller's CBBE model and the consumer decision-making process during courses such as Brand Management and Consumer Behaviour helped me analyse the interplay between brands, consumers, and data and piqued my interest in marketing and consumer brands.

To deepen my knowledge and keep up to date with the latest trends in marketing, I took online courses on digital marketing, marketing analytics, etc. By learning graphic design, I found immense joy in designing ads for my favourite brands in my free time. Through these pursuits, I was able to add real-world relevance to my theoretical study and improve my creativity and problem-solving skills.

Eager to gain hands-on experience with a consumer goods brand, I joined YZ as a sales intern. In my role, I proactively addressed a challenge encountered by YZ’s pet care brand, Purina – a low conversion rate of people returning to purchase their pet food after trying the samples. Throughout my internship, I delved into extensive research, including on-the-ground investigations, visiting local pet stores, and engaging with customers and sales representatives to comprehend the intricacies of the industry. I regularly consulted my guide for review and feedback, which helped me tweak my methodologies for my online survey.

After a month of meticulous research and brainstorming, I proposed the implementation of a sampling campaign on social media, accompanied by the introduction of a pet parent dashboard and a pet care helpline, creating a unique online trial experience. Presenting my idea to the regional sales manager enlightened me on the significance of concise presentations and respecting others' time. Through these interactions, I gained insights into the complex distribution challenges of FMCG companies and the crucial role of market research in launching an effective marketing strategy.

Designing a marketing strategy and learning about sales at YZ motivated me to start my professional career in sales and account management at PQ, a publicly listed restaurant aggregator and food delivery company in India. In my role as a growth manager, I managed a portfolio comprising more than 150 restaurants, focusing on revenue generation through the sale of ads/sponsored listings and negotiation of improved take rates. Early in my tenure, I faced a significant challenge when a major client expressed dissatisfaction with the growth trajectory, citing past negative experiences with the company. Employing effective communication and expectation management, I successfully pacified the client, rebuilding trust through frequent consultations over several months to address their growth concerns. Within six months, I orchestrated a remarkable 5x increase in their sales and orders by enhancing their menu and optimizing their marketing spending. Proficient in Excel, I developed trackers and models for both personal and team use, facilitating a clearer visualization of key data metrics. These trackers not only enhanced my understanding of the restaurant business but also unearthed valuable insights that I incorporated into my sales pitches. Moreover, I leveraged my proactive approach and strong relationship-building skills and consistently met monthly targets, leading to my swift promotion to the position of City Key Account Manager.

In my new role overseeing key chain restaurants in the city, I gained a deeper appreciation of the critical role of data in the intersection of brands and consumers. Managing larger clients with higher revenues presented a challenge in achieving growth within stringent marketing budgets but heightened growth expectations. To navigate this, I proactively sought innovative growth opportunities for my clients by deep-diving into data.

One notable instance involved negotiating a better commission for a top-order contributor who was unwilling to entertain a meeting. With the help of a colleague, I created innovative heat maps of the city, showcasing the client's order density along with cuisine demand and cuisine supply density. These insights helped the client to identify untapped areas for potential outlets with high demand and low competition, currently unserviced by any existing outlets. Happy with these insights, he agreed to meet me, and I successfully negotiated a higher commission, securing a significant deal of 7 lakhs INR per month. This experience underscored the indispensable role of data in delivering value in modern marketing contexts, showcasing its limitless potential to drive marketing insights even for established brands seemingly at market saturation.

Although I gained a fair amount of experience with sales and marketing at PQ, it was limited to the marketing context of India. PQ operates in the same marketing environment as every other e-commerce company in India, with existing users mainly consisting of the price-sensitive middle class. This forces e-commerce platforms to resort to discounting and "sale" culture while most of the big bucks are spent on celebrity-focused ads on traditional mass media. Thus, I aspire to work in broader contexts, such as the multinational and dynamic environment of an FMCG company or the brand-conscious and digitally driven environment of a luxury brand. However, I lack knowledge of the business and sociocultural environment in which such companies operate, as well as the international exposure and professional network that is needed to thrive in such global marketing environments.

Therefore, I believe the MiM program at LSE will help me cover this knowledge and skill gap through its focus on a theoretical curriculum and integration of management with social sciences. Core courses such as Managerial Economics and Marketing Management will not only help me understand the global business environment but also help me analyse the social, economic, and political factors which influence it and how managers can effectively navigate these. Moreover, by interacting with individuals from a variety of cultural as well as academic backgrounds, I will be exposed to a rich tapestry of perspectives and ideas, sensitising me to the socio-cultural environment of significant markets. Also, studying in an interdisciplinary and multicultural setting will provide me with an intellectually stimulating environment to solve contemporary business and marketing challenges such as GHG emissions and greenwashing. Finally, LSE's renowned research community, extensive resources, and collaborative opportunities will provide me with a unique platform to dive deep into research techniques that are relevant to the field of marketing and learn advanced statistical software such as Stata and Qualtrics.

Additionally, access to LSE Careers and LSE's vast alumni network will position me perfectly to kick-start my career of becoming a marketing manager in a retail or luxury company such as Unilever, P&G, and Harrods and work in London. I aspire to drive digital innovation and set high standards for customer experience. Digital marketing will be a key driver for achieving growth as social media and search engine marketing continue to become more targeted and flexible. I also envision growing direct-to-consumer distribution channels for these brands to reduce their reliance on third parties, such as channel intermediates and e-commerce platforms for data. These initiatives and responsibilities will improve my expertise in channel management, digital marketing, and developing and launching products, as well as strengthen my project management skills.

These skills will better position me for my long-term goal of becoming a senior executive in brand management. With the increasing investments in disruptive technologies, future branding solutions will likely be based on AI, blockchain, and digital reality. To keep pace with the trend of digital-native brands opening retail stores and retail giants entering online marketplaces, I will focus on omnichannel strategies, designing integrated customer journeys, and communicating a cohesive brand story spanning both digital and retail.

Additionally, as I aspire to begin my journey at LSE, I aspire to leverage my experiences from the sociocultural nuances of India to contribute to classroom discussions from the valuable viewpoint of an emerging market. My sales experience in the fast-paced and high-pressure duopolistic market of Indian food delivery will enable me to share unique industry insights with my peers. My familiarity with software such as SPSS and Excel would allow me to contribute more effectively to the quantitative courses of the program.

My experience in leading the alumni association and marketing club during my time at AB University has shaped me into an empathetic and creative leader and accustomed me to working with big teams under strict deadlines. I aim to bring this same mindset of empathy and creativity to the LSE Students' Union. Having seen the operational and financial hurdles faced by Step Up for India during the pandemic, I would like to contribute to non-profits and social organisations by joining the 180 Degrees Consulting club.

To conclude, the MIM program at the London School of Economics perfectly aligns with my aspirations, pursuing this comprehensive program will fast-track my path to attaining my career goals.
