HEC MiM Essay Questions and Answer Tips
Q1. “Why are you applying to HEC Paris and this program? Please include your career goals in this essay?” (450 words max)
A: Through this question, the Adcom is simply trying to determine the worthiness of your candidacy. The first part of the question aims at not only revealing the relevant knowledge you hold and the reason you wish to further hone the same but also get an impressive, well-informed answer as to why you have chosen this school. The motive here is to figure out if you know what and why you are doing. Moving to the second part of the question, mentioning your career goals is related to portraying a focused outlook and Adcoms are here to sieve through tons of candidates and shortlist the ones who showcase drive, determination and future plans that are in line with the value of the school.
To answer this question we recommend you break it down into three parts – past experience, career goals and reason for choosing the school. The trick here is to maintain a connection between the three. Ensure that your past experience, the reason for higher studies at the school and your career goals are in sync. So, pick wisely and select relevant experiences to elaborate on and keep connecting the dots. Do your research on the school and pick up features that cater to your requirements. Lastly, be specific about your goals by mentioning details like your target role and the company.
Q2. “What is Leadership to you and how do you recognize a great leader? Please include a personal example(s)?”
A: Every school is on a quest to birth future leaders, which is why leadership is one trait the school admires. This question seeks to evaluate your understanding of leadership and the qualities you believe an ideal leader must possess. Including personal examples wherein you showcased these qualities provides an insight into the leadership capabilities within you.
To go about answering this question, you must provide an example at every point of the answer. To begin with, shortlist 2 or 3 must needed traits in a leader and talk about how you have developed this belief by providing an example wherein you encountered this quality in a leader you look up to. Further, elaborate on how you adopted this similar approach in your personal life and emerged victorious in a particular situation. Since this is a competency-based question, follow the STAR method here, i.e., describe the situation, your task, the specific action you took and the result you brought about.
Q3. “In recent weeks, what business issue or news topic have you found inspiring?”
A: This question is nothing but a test on your general awareness and how updated you are with the current happenings, which is why while answering the question you must select a recent business issue or news topic, preferably one that is from your field of interest and provide your views on the same to bring to light your understanding of the subject. Then you must mention why it caught your eye in the first place and how it has inspired you to take action or bring about a change in your personal/professional life. This action can be in the past, present or future.
Q4. Anything else you wish to tell us? (optional) (1000 characters max)
A: This is an additional question which you may use to provide insights into the aspects of your profile you haven’t brushed upon yet. Generally, this space is utilized to mention the reason for a setback which could be a low GPA or GMAT score, lack of experience, etc in a candidate’s profile. If you feel the need to provide details on life events like an achievement besides a setback in your profile, feel free to talk about it here. This is entirely optional, but we would suggest that you make the most of every essay question in the application since it will just provide a clearer understanding of your capabilities.
