INTRODUCTION

Formed in 1969, the Graduate School of Business Administration enrolled its first class of 20 students in 1970. In 1974, Thomas F. Keller, a 1953 Duke graduate, became the graduate school's new dean. In three years, Keller's capital campaign raised $24 million, $10 million of which came from businessman and philanthropist J.B. Fuqua.

The graduate school's name was then changed to The Fuqua School of Business. J.B. Fuqua was raised by his grandparents on a tobacco farm in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Fuqua began his relationship with Duke University when he borrowed books by mail from the Duke library. J.B. Fuqua's cumulative giving to Duke was nearly $40 million at the time of his death on April 5, 2006.

In September 2008, Fuqua launched an expansion initiative to establish campuses in St. Petersburg, Russia; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Shanghai/Kunshan, China; New Delhi, India, and London, England.

The Program

Duke Fuqua School of Business MMS-Master of Management Studies offers 2 programs

1) MMS FOB: Foundations of Business.

2) MMS DKU: Duke Kunshan University.

While the Foundations of Business program is more centered towards providing "a jump start into the business world and a leg up on the graduating competition". It is a 10-month program which takes place in US campus at Durham, NC.

The MMS DKU is centered towards providing a more diverse learning experience with half the course in the USA and then the other half in China. This course is a step towards acknowledging the rapid growth of the Asian economies, and as the world is moving towards the east.

Traditionally Duke is a very well regarded Tier-1 B-School and the first school to start a Pre-experience post-graduate program in the US. The class size is pretty small with a class size of 110 students and has a good diversity of 43% international students.

Over the last few years, Duke has been making conscious efforts to transform and project itself as a truly global B-school. It has forged collaborations with Top B-Schools in India (ISB, IIM Bangalore, IIM Ahmedabad), Shanghai Jiao Tong University, GSOM, St. Petersburg State University and DFIC (UAE) to expand its global footprints in India, China, Russia and the Middle East.

Fuqua even has plans to set up full-fledged campuses at 5 strategic locations across continents. Considering its expansion plans and ambitions it may be a very wise choice to go to a school whose degree will turn more valuable and well known with time.

Duke Fuqua's MMS will prepare you to enter the field of finance, marketing, consulting, or general management. Your knowledge of the fundamentals of various management subjects will make you more attractive to hiring managers. You will get the skills to hit the ground running once you've landed a position.

APPLICATION ESSAY INSIGHTS

Before you start writing your essays, you should consider the attributes Duke values.

IMPACT  & LEGACY

Duke puts a special emphasis on making an impact & leaving a legacy. These are touted as the cornerstones of Duke's culture.

A good way to make a positive impression is having a clear thought process about how you plan to portray & highlight these two qualities in your application.

Some questions that may help you do this are:

  • What are you passionate about?
  • What legacy do you hope to leave at Fuqua?
  • After graduation, what impact do you hope to have in your work and broader communities?

3 short answer questions and 2 essays are required for all applicants.

Required Short Answer Questions

Answer all three questions. Respond in 500 characters only (the equivalent of about 100 words per question).

  1. Why are you pursuing the MMS degree at this stage in your professional development?
  2. What are your immediate career goals after completing the MMS program?
  3. Life is full of uncertainties, and plans and circumstances can change. As a result, navigating a career requires you to be adaptable. Should the immediate goals that you provided above not materialize, what alternative directions have you considered?

Required Essay 1

Instructions: Present your response in list form, numbered from 1 - 25. Some points may only be a few words, while others may be longer. Your complete list should not exceed 2 pages.

Question: The "Team Fuqua" spirit and community is one of the things that set the Fuqua experience apart, and it is a concept that extends beyond the student body to include faculty, staff, and administration. When a new person joins the Admissions Team, we ask that person to share with everyone in the office a list of "25 Random Things About Yourself." As an Admissions team, we already know the new hire's professional and academic background, so learning these "25 Random Things" helps us to get to know someone's personality, background, special talents, and more.

In this spirit, the Admissions Committee also wants to get to know you—beyond the professional and academic achievements listed in your resume and transcript. You can share with us important life experiences, your likes/dislikes, hobbies, achievements, fun facts, or anything that helps us understand what makes you who you are.

Required Essay 2

Instructions: From the two options below, choose only one of the questions to answer. Your response to either essay question should be no more than 500 words, with a font size of no less than 10-point. Respond fully and concisely using 1.5 line spacing. Do not copy the essay question in the document you upload with your application.

Option 1 Question:

For our MMS: FOB class, the Admissions team is looking for students who are eager to engage with, and learn from, their classmates. This learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom, as extracurricular engagement is an important part of the MMS: FOB experience.  Describe how you would plan to be engaged outside of the classroom, and how your unique perspective, experiences, and passions will add to the MMS community.

Option 2 Question:

The MMS: FOB program is developing leaders who are able to effect change in the communities of which they are a part. Share a time that you were able to make a change in your community: at school, at work, or at home. How will you use the lessons you learned and skills you developed as an MMS: FOB student?

Optional Essay

If you feel there are circumstances of which the admissions committee should be aware, please explain them (e.g. unexplained gaps in work, choice of recommenders or lack of a professional recommendation, inconsistent or questionable academic performance. Do NOT upload additional essays nor additional recommendations in this area. The Optional Essay is intended to provide the admissions committee with insight into your circumstances only.

Re-applicant Essay

An additional essay is required for re-applicants. It is not uncommon for it to take more than one try to achieve a goal. Please share with us the self-reflection process that you underwent after last year's application and how you have grown as a result. How did it shape your commitment to Fuqua and inspire your decision to reapply? Respond in 2 pages or less.

MiM Essay was very helpful in terms of organising my thinking and they knew exactly what to highlight in my experiences. It's also very helpful for me to know what's the logic behind the essay questions and what traits schools are they looking for in candidates.
The team was very dedicated and usually responded to my needs very quickly. Talking to them you instantly know that the team is very experienced in MiM applications and provides strong personalized insights .
For people who are considering the service, I suggest that they try it at the early stage of their application so that they could maximise the value of the service. If I would have chosen them earlier I could have saved a lot of time.

Personally, I think that the services of MIM-Essay were essential to get admitted in my target schools, where the competition is incredibly high. In fact, the essay review helped me to highlight all my skills and strengths hence producing an incredibly strong application. Even if some of my test scores weren’t that good, the beautiful essay filled this gap and brought me several offers from the grad schools. The dedication of Nikhil was tremendous, before even starting to work on our essays we had a 1.5 hour long brainstorming call, to make sure they understood my strengths. This attitude reinforced the belief that I had made the right choice, and getting an admit from LSE and Duke, proved me right.
