What Are the BITSoM MBA Essay Requirements?

If you're applying to BITSoM's MBA program, writing a strong essay is a big part of getting in. The essay shows who you are beyond your scores and work experience. It’s where the admissions team learns about your goals, values, and how well you’ll fit in their program. This section will help you understand the full process, the role of the essay, and mistakes to avoid.

The BITSoM MBA application is simple and clear. Here's what you need to do:

Step What It Includes
1 Fill out the online form with your details
2 Submit scores: GMAT, GRE, or CAT
3 Write two essays about your journey and goals
4 Provide one letter of recommendation
5 Attend a personal interview

Each step matters, but your essay is your chance to stand out. It shows your story, values, and why you want to study at BITSoM. That’s why it’s covered in detail in most BitSoM MBA Essay and Tips guides.

Importance of Essays in the Selection Criteria

BITSoM uses the essays to look beyond numbers. They check:

  • What drives you in life and work
  • If your career goals match what BITSoM offers
  • How well you fit in with their values and class culture

The admissions team reads your essays to see who you are as a person. If your story connects well with their vision, you have a better chance of getting selected.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Your Essays

Even smart applicants make some easy-to-avoid mistakes. Here are a few to watch out for:

  • Writing general or boring stories
  • Just listing achievements instead of showing growth
  • Ignoring the exact essay question
  • Using complex words or industry terms no one understands

To make your essay better, keep it simple, honest, and focused. Many guides like BitSoM MBA Essay and Tips suggest using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to explain your experiences.

Sample BITSoM MBA Essay Prompts and How to Answer Them

Sample BITSoM MBA Essay Prompts and How to Answer Them

Understanding what BITSoM expects in your essays is key to writing strong responses. Based on past application insights, here are two common essay prompts and tips on how to answer them effectively. Here are some BITSoM MBA Application Insider: ESSAY GUIDE

Essay Prompt 1:

"Tell us about yourself, your beliefs, values, academics/professional, and leadership experience. How will this enrich the cohort experience?"

Sample Answer:

A. I am a young and enthusiastic techy nerd with a passion for exploring new things in life. I believe in working hard is key to achieving anything in life and collaborating with others. Professionally I’m committed to developing and implement applications that make an impact on our daily activities.

B. I believe that a person working hard consistently with determination, commitment and self-evaluation will definitely accomplish their goals. Many believe that luck favours those who work hard, but i believe that luck is not needed when we work hard enough without depending on it. In the process of working hard, experience can be gained, skills can be learned and lessons can be learned from failures. These are not seen when success is achieved by pure luck. These experiences and skills can be further used in the future to achieve success.

“Kindness is not what you do, but who you are”. The kindness you give will always comeback in many ways. I think that helping someone who is in dire need of help, irrespective of the relation we have with them is an essential value a human should have. We never know how someone is facing issues with their personal life or work life, a little bit of kindness can help them a lot when they are having a bad day. Kindness need not be in big actions, it can be in small actions as well like getting a refreshment for your over stressed colleague, setting up a relaxed environment around you so people can feel comfortable talking to you, giving a smile whenever you pass by some friend/partner etc. These small actions make a huge impact on others as we do not know what they are going through and they can use these small gestures to about their day.

I am an IT job holder and have had a situation where I had to be an acting team lead in the absence of our team lead who was on COVID leave. It was definitely a tough job holding the team together, motivating them to work and clarifying their doubts. But I was also excited to get an opportunity like this as I will gain experience in managing the team, sorting the team priorities, understanding the team’s potential and allotting the work accordingly. I have learned how to take the suggestions and opinions from the team and then implement the plan of action. I have also asked the team to give me any feedback for which they have appreciated me for supporting them through rough situations and for doing a great job as acting team lead without any proper experience.

A brief analysis of the two samples:

For sample A, three lines won’t cut it.

For sample B, while we do want to know about your beliefs, you should be able to connect it to BITSoM and then the MBA program. In addition, the reviewers prefer concrete examples over generic statements. If you can back up what you say about yourself with past evidence, then you are on the right track. MBA is a quant-heavy program; the more numbers you can add to showcase your consistent effort and significant impact, the better. Both what you write and how you write are important to the reviewers.

Two essays that did make it through

A. I was born and raised in a lower-middle-class household where owning a television was considered a luxury. My father worked as a peon for over 20 years to care for my family. Despite a dry wallet, my father joined me in the best school in my city. My school is a missionary, and along with academics, it taught me the importance of overall development and treating everyone with courtesy.

I was curious and actively participated in various sports and extracurricular activities. Challenge is something that I always crave, and it reflects in all my choices. My interest in Gymnastics developed in school. The training was physically exerting and demanded extra effort from day one. My experiences in Gymnastics have helped me strengthen traits such as relentless discipline, evident leadership, and true sportsmanship. They are now part of my nature, and I remain less tense and composed in my personal and professional life. All these traits and efforts have made me a Nationally recognized Gymnast. Even today, I spend at least one hour daily on my physical fitness through yoga or trampoline gymnastics.

My involvement in Entrepreneurship has been another essential phase and significant building block in my career. This interest and pursuit in entrepreneurship have constantly pushed me to learn new skills. This attitude of introspection and determination to learn has helped me master key skills like Marketing, Web Development, Graphic Design, and App Development.

After a few years of work experience and practical learning, I was confident about my marketing ability and skill. After that, I resigned from my comfortable marketing manager position and co-founded an online marketing agency. With my creative mind and practical thought process, I have developed multiple marketing strategies and have been a strong pillar of growth and revenue for our company. We have successfully scaled the company to 3 cities, generated a gross transactional sale value of 4 crores, and built an investor pool of over 20 crores looking to invest in just 16 months. Additionally, I manage a team of 10 members, which includes a marketing manager, marketing specialists, graphic designers, and SEO experts.

All these experiences will come into play during my tenure at BITSoM. My strong subject knowledge of digital marketing and investments will be very insightful and informative. In particular, my understanding of the Indian businesses and startup ecosystem will be educational to aspiring entrepreneurs. Furthermore, my journey of building our startup – scaling it to three cities, generating a gross transactional sale revenue of 3 crores, creating strategies to market efficiently with low budgets, and handling roadblocks – can be real-time learning experiences shared during discussions, group tasks, and club activities which will eventually aid in my peer’s learning experience.

Essay Prompt 2:

"Tell us a little bit about yourself, your beliefs, and your career aspirations. How will an MBA degree help in reaching your goals?"

Sample Answer:

I am Anushka; age – 21 years; gender – female; height – 168 cm. My friends would call me ‘surprisingly competent’. My sister would call me more trouble than I’m worth. Plato would (only half seriously) call me a featherless biped.

But it is easy enough for those who are close to me (and long-dead philosopher-wrestlers) to get a sense of myself and my character. It is significantly more difficult to sum it up for strangers.

I can not tell you where I’m from, barring a twee repetition of “India is my country”. My father is from Uttar Pradesh, my mother is from Maharashtra, and they both settled in Kerala. I have studied in six different schools across five cities, one of which was in the United States. I speak Hindi at home, English at work, and Malayalam when asking auto-rickshaw drivers for directions.

I can not tell you much about my life either since it has been a fairly routine one — subjects I like (English, Mathematics) and subjects I don’t (Chemistry mostly), friends, a job, and a family. I could list out my hobbies (keyboard, sailing, gardening) and a few positive adjectives that have been used to describe me (perseverant, dedicated, sharp), but there’s no reason I can’t claim to be cool headed, charming, or jovial either, the veracity of those descriptions notwithstanding.

The best way to get across what I am is to talk about what I wish to become. And I want to be one of the hundreds of thousands of people who maintain the perpetual motion machine that is human civilization. I am not yet sure in what capacity – maybe someone who looks after its day-to-day processes in either maintenance or as a part of the elaborate system of checks and balances that keeps it chugging along, or one of the people who perform last-minute (and post-breakdown) repairs at top speeds to minimize downtime and limit inefficiencies in other parts of the machine.

I have never been able to decide on what role I’d like. However, I noticed a common thread in the roles I imagined myself playing – most of them involved a certain degree of management, albeit across varied fields, and an awareness of how money works and flows across the world. My undergraduate degree (a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature) gave me a greater appreciation for the complexity of the world and the changing rules of culture that underpin it; I would now like to learn more about the practicalities of it.

This realization inspired me to go for an MBA, which is why I am applying to BITSoM.

I am familiar with how businesses are run and am excited to learn more about it and management in general. I will work towards deciding what to specialize in, and, in the medium term, I hope to be placed at a company that will give me the chance to grow and attain mastery over my chosen field.

Let me share another prompt and the samples:

Sample Essay Prompt:

"Describe what you believe to be your most significant accomplishment or failure to date, explaining why you view it as such, and what you learned from it"

The essays that didn’t work:

Sample Answer:

A. Most significant accomplishment in my life is getting a job in an IT firm I have always admired. I have admired my cousin who has been working with the IT firm for a long time and have achieved great success in their career. I also wanted to start my career there in the desirable domain and prepare for MBA simultaneously. It has been difficult to manage both work and preparation for MBA, but I have been consistent and I am sure I will achieve my goal.

Using these prompts and answering strategies can make your essays more impactful and aligned with what BITSoM is truly looking for. Refer to BitSoM MBA Essay and Tips to see more examples and improve your final draft.

B. I had a backlog in my Btech 3rd semester. That was the first time I failed academically in my life. I was depressed. Later I gathered courage and started understanding things related to technology, which I’m interested in, and implementing things in a way to solve my problems. And I’m also passionate about helping people with the knowledge I have.

Analysis of the samples: Both of them have mentioned about their accomplishments, but t’s not the size of the accomplishment that matters but how it made an impact on you, what you learned from it and how it shaped your goals matters more.

The essays that worked:

A. All my life, I have been an ‘A Grade’ student. I scored 90+% for the majority of my school life. I knew how to accept a win with pride but never to embrace a setback with grace. I never really felt the need to understand the latter until my graduation.

When I entered graduate school, I came across many individuals who were at par with me, a few who were not as good as I considered myself to be, and some who were better than me. Being a science student with no prior commerce experience, I didn’t realize the level of unfamiliarity I was entering. As the semester progressed, I realized why students complained about financial accounting being the trickiest subject of their commerce curriculum. Commerce students had two years to study the course we had to finish in barely four months.

As a college student, I wanted to participate in as many clubs and activities outside the classroom as possible. I joined the clubs and started working wholeheartedly towards them, completely ignoring my studies. My naïve-self thought that the last month was enough to finish the subject course. At last, the exam month came. I realized I wouldn’t get a good score in this subject. Thanks to CBSE, the thought of failure never entered my mind. Results came in, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had failed two subjects, Microeconomics and Financial Accounting.

The only option for redemption was the retest scheduled after a month. But due to a lack of time, I could only cover one subject adequately. Hence in the retest, I failed Financial Accounting. This meant I had to repeat that subject. To do that, I had to shift my admission to the newer batch. I still remember that moment and will probably for the rest of my life. I’d never experienced failure before. The moment of realization that I was left behind. Everyone I know has crossed me. I do not wish to go through that again.

But now, looking back, I’m grateful for that day. That day reinvented me as an individual. It encouraged me to do things I never imagined I would. I see it as a setback I received early in life, which keeps me on my toes and pushes me to perform well. When filling out my re-application, I noticed having the choice of repeating all the subjects. I picked that option; everyone thought I was crazy to risk all my marks again. But I was determined to improve myself, and it helped; I secured a 3+ GPA of 4.

Since then, I’ve made it a point to balance my life. I’ve taken up many leadership roles and have been a team leader in every project undertaken. My team has always been in the top two. I look at this experience as the penultimate moment of my life. Had it not happened, I’d have been much different today.

B. I am most proud of partnering with my mother to set up a new collection of affordable jewelry aimed at the Gen Z audience.

Throughout childhood, I watched my mother peering at diamonds, their size and clarity, and coupling them with gold to create elaborate designs. I found her work fascinating and observed the appreciative faces of her customers. Her customer demographic was distinct – older women/men in their 30’s to 60s. These were the people who had the income to invest in jewelry.

During my undergraduate years, I observed that most of my friends bought costume jewelry, which was all they could afford with their allowance. Many of them developed allergies and skin rashes which were recurrent and frustrating. Based on our numerous chats, I figured they would gladly pay a little more and buy authentic jewelry if there were enough options in a lower price range. That got me thinking about creating a line of jewelry that is stylish and affordable.

Later that evening, I spoke to my mother about it. My mother, always open to considering new ideas, mulled over it for a few days. During that time, I began to design contemporary pendants and rings that resonated with the style quotient of my friends. I showed them the designs and asked them to add to my collection which they did with great enthusiasm. Trendy, Modern, Timeless, and Classic – I had them all.

Meanwhile, my mum, who initially shared my excitement, was a bit skeptical about the profitability of this venture, especially since most of the designs I had created were those that needed to be machine-cut. “Making single pieces of jewelry was not an option,” she said. ‘What if all the pieces of a certain design don’t sell”? “A lot of the gold will be lost in trying to melt them,” she said. I needed to find a cost-effective solution to this problem. I began exploring designs with varying degrees of gold in the design – we introduced 14 kt and 10 kt designs and worked with stones like zirconia. The result- A stunning collection of an ‘Everyday- Everywhere’ brand of jewelry comprising modern and contemporary, spread across earrings, finger rings, pendants, chains, and bracelets. All this with a lifetime buy-back guarantee.

At the next jewelry exhibition, we showcased our new collection. The response beat all our initial fears. I was on cloud nine, and so were my mother and friends.

As I reflect on this experience, I am proud of myself for identifying a new opportunity and having the self-belief to pursue it. Through this work, I learned to trust my gut and focus on identifying solutions, no matter how challenging the problems seem. I have now identified Business strategy and Innovation as my core area of interest, and I’m looking forward to strengthening my knowledge in this space while at BITSoM.

Hope the samples gave you a fair idea of how to frame and write your essays.

Now, one question you might have on your mind is that “I don’t have any exotic experiences.”

Not an issue. Simple experiences are accepted wholeheartedly if there are answers and reasonings to support them. We had an answer last year about how one student’s journey to becoming a better leader started from something innocuous as realizing he was a lousy roommate during the COVID lockdown.

The essay is one place where you get to highlight some of your achievements, make a case for yourself to be part of BITSoM, and leave an impression of yourself on the reviewer’s mind. Take the support of your friends, mentors, and family.
