Key Academic Requirements for Harvard MBA
Getting into Harvard Business School means proving you're academically ready for its competitive and fast-paced MBA program. For Indian students and other international applicants, Harvard looks at more than just your grades; they review your full academic background, test scores, and language proficiency if needed. Here are the key academic requirements for the Harvard MBA:
- Transcripts: To apply for the Harvard MBA, you need a degree equal to a U.S. bachelor’s most Indian three-year degrees are accepted. You’ll need to upload transcripts from all colleges you’ve attended. A student copy is fine for now; official ones are needed if you get in. There’s no minimum GPA, and Harvard looks at your full academic journey, not just grades, but also where and what you studied.
- GMAT/GRE: To apply for the Harvard MBA, you need a valid Harvard MBA GMAT or GRE score; there’s no preference or minimum score required. You can share your unofficial score while applying, but the official score must be sent by the test center. If your GMAT doesn’t include a writing section, you’ll need to take the GMAC Business Writing Assessment later. Make sure your Harvard MBA GMAT score is recent and falls within the required dates for your application round.
- English Language Test: If your undergrad wasn’t fully taught in English, you’ll need to take TOEFL iBT, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo for the Harvard MBA. There’s no minimum score, but HBS recommends at least TOEFL 109, IELTS 7.5, PTE 75, or Duolingo 145. If your master’s was in English, the test is optional but still recommended. Make sure your test date fits the round you're applying to. Use TOEFL code 3444 when sending scores.
- Essay: If you’re applying to the Harvard MBA Class of 2028 (starting in fall 2026), you’ll need to answer three short essays—one about your career choices and goals (300 words), one on your leadership and how you invest in others (250 words), and one about a time you showed curiosity and how it led to growth (250 words). If you’re applying to a joint degree program, like with Harvard Law, Kennedy, or Engineering School, you’ll also need to submit an extra essay specific to that program. There’s also an optional essay if you have more to share.
- Recommendations: You’ll need two recommendations submitted online by your application deadline. It’s your job to make sure they’re in on time. There’s no fixed rule on who should recommend you—choose people who know you well and can give honest, detailed answers. It could be a current or former boss, a colleague, or even someone you’ve worked with outside of work. What matters most is how well they know you, not their title or if they went to HBS. Recommenders will fill out a skills grid and answer two questions about your performance and how you handled feedback.
- Resume: Submit a standard business resume or CV. The Admissions Board recommends at least two years of full-time work experience before enrolling.
- Fee or Fee Waiver: The Harvard MBA application fee is $250 and must be paid by credit card. It’s non-refundable and helps cover the cost of reviewing your application. If you’re active-duty military, you don’t need to pay. If the fee is a financial burden, you can request a need-based waiver once you start your application. For 2+2 applicants, the fee is reduced to $100.
